The Ontology Engineering Group (OEG) was founded in 1995 and is based at the School of Computer Science at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, UPM. The group carries out research in the fields of Ontological Engineering, (Social) Semantic Web and Linked Data, Natural Language, Semantic e-Science and the Future Internet.

Some of the most relevant achievements attained by the group in these fields are the following:

  • Ontological Engineering. We have proposed several methodologies for developing ontologies and ontology networks (Methontology and NeOn methodology). It has also created tools for their development (WebODE and NeOn Toolkit, the latter developed within the NeOn project in partnership with other research groups and companies).
  • (Social) Semantic Web and Linked Data. We lead the Spanish Thematic Network of Linked Data and we have developed Linked Data applications in partnership with the National Geographic Institute of Spain (GeolinkedData), AEMET, the National Library (datos.bne.es) and Prisa Digital (El Viajero). Additionally, we have created a set of tools (such as NOR2O, ODEMapster and Morph, map4rdf, geometry2rdf and sitemap4rdf) for generating and using Linked Data. Furthermore, we have created algorithms for disambiguating user-generated tags in social networks (Sem4Tags).
  • Natural Language. We conduct research in ontology-based generation of natural language (ONTOGENERATION); in the standardization, by means of ontologies, of linguistic annotation tag-sets; and in the creation of ontologies and multilingual Linked Data through models  like  LEMON.
  • Semantic e-Science. We work with research groups of other scientific disciplines (Geography. Astronomy and Biology) to whom we provide support for the development and the semantic description of their scientific workflows (Wf4Ever, ADMIRE)
  • The Future Internet. We provide support for the semantic description of data from sensor networks —we have participated in the creation of the W3C SSN Ontology— and for the provision of ontology-based access to sensor data and middleware (SPARQL-Stream).

OEG is noted for carrying out not only basic research but also applied research. We have developed applications for a wide range of environments including knowledge management, e-commerce, job search and finance, geo-location, ID project management and multimedia library management, among others. The members of OEG are active members of standardization groups, especially within the W3C.
